Safe Environments

Our parish and diocese are committed to creating and maintaining safe, respectful, and protective spaces for children, youth, and vulnerable adults.

“Protecting the dignity and safety of every person entrusted to our care is a sacred responsibility of the Church.”

The Church’s Safe Environment efforts are more than compliance — they are a reflection of our calling to protect the dignity and safety of every person entrusted to our care. These programs help form healthy relationships, prevent harm, and support healing and respect in our community.

Why Safe Environments Matter

The Catholic Church affirms the dignity and sacredness of every human person.

  • Safe Environment programs are grounded in this belief and seek:

  • To reduce risk

  • Foster respect

  • Educate all members of the parish community about personal safety.

  • Training and awareness opportunities are provided for children, youth, parents, and adults who work or volunteer with minors.

Diocesan Safe Environment Requirements

As part of the Diocese of Norwich, all parish staff, clergy, deacons, religious, volunteers, and others who have regular contact with minors must complete the Diocese’s Safe Environment training and background screening requirements. These programs are required to help ensure a culture of awareness, protection, and safety in our parish and ministries.

Child & Youth Safety Training

Safe Environment education includes training for children and youth that teaches them how to recognize and respond to unsafe situations and how to seek help when needed. This training is age-appropriate and consistent with best practices for child protection.

Training for Adults, Volunteers & Ministers

Adults serving in ministries or working with children are required to:

  • Complete safe environment training approved by the Diocese.

  • Pass criminal background and screening checks.

  • Review and agree to diocesan Safe Environment policies and codes of conduct.

This training supports responsible ministry and the protection of all parishioners in our community.
